Installation instructions for Windows 98 upgrade

The following instructions are for upgrading to Windows 98.  Be sure that your system meets the following minimum requirements before upgrading.

  • Pentium - 166
  • 24 MB Ram
  • 200 MB Disk Space needed

Now, if your system meets the above requirements, lets begin the preparation for the installation of Windows 98.

  1. Clean your system of all clutter.  IE: Empty your Recycle Bin, clean all Windows/Temp files, clear your browser cache.

  2. Run a ScanDisk then a Defrag.

  3. If you have compressed your drive using Windows DriveSpace, decompress now.  You will lose space but if you keep compressed files during the upgrade you can lose data.

  4. Just in case something should go wrong, create a Start-up Disk:  Insert a blank Floppy disk into your Floppy drive. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove programs icon. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties box, select the Startup Disk tab and click the Create Disk button.

  5. Since you have done a ScanDisk and a Defrag, all of the items in your "Close Programs List" should be turned off except for "Explorer" and "Systray".  Check by selecting Control > Alt > Delete on your keyboard. 

  6. Turn off your Screen Saver and your Background. Do this by right-clicking on your Desktop, choose "Properties", then select the "Background" tab. Using the scroll bar, scroll to "None" and click it.  Click "Apply".  Now click on the "Screen Saver" tab and select "None". Click "Apply".

Okay, lets begin the Installation of Windows 98:

  • Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CDROM. Installation will begin automatically.

  • A series of dialog boxes appear, prompting you for information and preferences for your setup.

  • When asked if you want to save your old operating system, choose [Yes]. This will enable you to run programs that don't work in Windows 98, it will also make it easier to uninstall Windows 98 if you decide to.

  • Setup will prompt you to make a startup disk, it is not a bad idea to go ahead and do this. 

  • When Setup has completed, you will be prompted to restart you computer.

  • Enjoy Windows 98.
